Characteristics

Perennial herb. Rootstock producing a cluster of long, fleshy or sub-fusiform roots. Stem 1, 70-150 mm tall, slightly winged or ribbed, simple or possibly sparingly branched from base, pubescent, reddish. Leaves in 4-6 pairs, shortly petiolate, spreading, oblong-elliptic to orbicular-ovate, 10-16 x 6-10 mm, thinly pubescent on both sides or glabrous above, veins and margin more densely hairy with short, stiff, spreading hairs. Flowers solitary, lateral at upper nodes; pedicels about 7 mm long. Sepals lanceolate-subulate, ±3 mm long. Corolla inverted at attachment of pedicel, maroon; lobes erect from base with a slight constriction below middle, then spreading slightly, keeled down inner face and thickened rugose towards apex, ±10 mm long, ±4 mm broad at base, ciliate a, constriction with tuft of long, subclavatet vibratile, purple hairs directed mainly inwards. Corona arising about halfway up staminal column and overtopping it; outer lobes 1.4-1.7 mm long, erect, linear, truncate, sometimes very slightly dilated, canaliculate into the pockets, with long hairs at tips, minutely puberulous below, mainly pale purplish; inner lobes closely incumbent on anthers, linear, obtuse, somewhat swollen at outer basal margin, dark purple-brown. Pollinia ±0.25 mm long; beak translucent; carrier small, oblong, shortly winged about middle.
