Characteristics

Rootstock producing fibrous root system. Stems fleshy, up to about 15 mm thick, decumbent or trailing, cylindric, tuberculate, rooting in contact with soil; branches constricted at junction, tapering and sometimes climbing towards inflorescences, glabrous, dull green mottled and often tinged with purple. Leaves rudimentary, arising from tubercled base, up to 3 mm long, cordate-ovate or deltoid, acute, with minute globular stipules at base, glabrous. Flowers in pedunculate cymes on slender ultimate growth; cymes 1-several, developing more or less successively; peduncle 2-20 mm long; pedicels up to 10 mm long. Sepals ovate-lanceolate, about 4 mm long. Corolla up to 70 mm long, divided nearly halfway; tube ovoid-inflated at base, 6-7 mm diam., narrowed above, straight or curved, expanded into a funnel-shaped mouth, pubescent inside at mouth and in basal part with white, curly hairs, pale greenish white, spotted with violet; lobes free, usually spreading-recurved, replicate, 20-35 mm long, pubescent on lower part of inner face, white with margins and apical part violet-purple, greenish yellow or purple-brown. Corona shortly connate; outer lobes about 2-2.5 mm high, bifid, pubescent within and at least sometimes with a few long hairs on tips, variably coloured, confluent with base of inner lobes; inner lobes linear, incumbent-erect above staminal column.
