Characteristics

Rootstock perennial, producing a cluster of fleshy, fusiform roots up to about 100 mm long. Stem annual, solitary, erect, rarely 1-branched above, up to about 0.4 m tall, glabrous. Leaves in 4-7 pairs, suberect, linear, acute, 25-50 x 1-2 mm, with recurved margins. Flowers solitary, 1-2 from subterminal and terminal node, erect; pedicels 6-10 mm long. Sepals lanceolate-subulate, ±5 mm long. Corolla 35-65 mm long; tube up to 20 mm long, 6-8 mm diam. at the densely papillate-scabrous, subglobosely inflated base, contracted above into a ±3 mm diam. smooth tube, and expanded to ±5 mm at mouth, papillate within inflation, yellowish green, apparently purplish-veined at mouth; lobes free, spreading, narrowly linear or replicate-filiform from shortly deltoid base, up to 35 mm long, pubescent with fine purple hairs on inner face and with tuft of dark purple, clavate hairs slightly above base. Corona arising about 1 mm up staminal column, shortly cupular at base; outer lobes ±2 mm long, forming 5 pockets within base, bifid, ciliate and minutely pubescent within, dark purple; inner lobes arising from within outer lobes, linear or slightly spathulate-linear, ±2 mm long, incumbent-erect.
