Characteristics

Perennial herb. Rootstock producing a cluster of long, fleshy, subfusiform roots. Stem 1, simple or sparingly branched above, up to about 0.35 m tall, villous with multicellular hairs. Leaves shortly petiolate; blade broadly ovate, up to 40 mm long, villous beneath, glabrescent above. Flowers solitary from upper nodes; pedicels slender, 15-35 mm long, pubescent. Sepals subulate from broadly ovate base, about 8 mm long, with 1-2 glands in sinuses, pubescent. Corolla divided almost to base; lobes contiguous around staminal column, thence spreading, up to 20 mm long, 4-6 mm broad, with outer surface smooth, inner surface minutely papillate, dark green to metallic blue-green or black, greenish grey or yellowish within base; margins ciliate with long, simple or clavate, reddish purple, vibratile hairs. Corona arising slightly above base of staminal column, producing 5 spreading, bilobuled lobes 2-5 mm long, puberulous; inner lobes connivent-erect, up to 6 mm long, linear, with apex truncate to crenate, blackish, minutely papillate. Pollinia subrotund, with translucent upper margin, attached by short caudicles to shiny, brown, winged carriter. Follicles paired, slender, up to about 100 mm long, greenish grey.
