Characteristics

Perennial herb. Rootstock producing a cluster of long, fleshy, subfusiform roots. Stem 1, simple or occasionally sparingly branched, up to 0.6 m tall, softly pubescent. Leaves ascending, shortly petiolate, ovate to subcordate, acute or obtuse, up to about 35 x 3 mm, softly pubescent on both surfaces. Flowers solitary, lateral at nodes; pedicels up to 25 mm long, softly hairy, bearing a foliaceous, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate bract at base. Sepals ascending-spreading, linear-spathulate, ±2.5 mm long, softly hairy. Corolla divided almost to base, the united portion flattish to saucer-shaped; lobes linear from ovate base, spreading, pubescent outside, puberulous within, yellow to greenish, marked with reddish or brownish dots. Corona arising slightly up staminal column, producing erect outer lobes, slightly over 2 mm long, divided to below middle into 2 diverging, linear-subulate lobules; inner lobes connivent-erect, up to 5 mm long, spathulate-oblanceolate, puberulous, dark violet-brown to black. Follicles solitary or in slightly diverging pairs, slender, up to 170 mm long, glabrous; seeds suboblong, up to 10 mm long, broadly margined, brown, with tuft of hairs.
