Characteristics

Perennial herb. Tuber ±50 mm diam., slightly depressed. Branches few-several, prostrate, up to 0.25 m long, sometimes branched from near base, puberulous, with minute, retrorse hairs or glabrescent. Leaves spreading, ovate to lanceolate, up to 15-20 mm in early growth, gradually diminishing to 3 x 2 mm on the terminal portion, thinly puberulous above or glabrous; petiole up to 5 mm long. Flowers 1-2 laterally at nodes; pedicels 3-7 mm long, sparsely and minutely puberulous. Sepals linear-acuminate, ±4 mm long, projecting beyond sinuses. Corolla 8-12 mm diam. (14 mm in cult.), rotate, flat or with small depression containing basal portion of staminal column, united part 5-6 mm diam., maroon, usually with transverse dull yellow banding around corona; lobes ovate-lanceolate, 2.5-4 mm long, becoming darker purple-brown to the tips. Corona dark purple-brown, ±3 mm diam., forming 5 shallow pockets with broadly U-shaped, sometimes minutely 2-toothed outer margin, confluent on ± lateral margin with base of inner lobes; inner lobes ± linear, incumbent on anthers. Pollinia compressed, ±0.25 mm long, with amber-coloured, translucent inner margin; caudicles very short; carrier very shortly winged. Follicles subfusiform, 30-50 mm long, green.
