Ceropegia haygarthii Schltr.

Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae > Ceropegia

Characteristics

Twining/climbing, subsucculent geophyte. Stems often much branched and tangled in basal vegetation, up to 5 m long; from fibrous or fleshy rootstock. Leaves ± fleshy, oblong to ovate-lanceolate, up to 75 x 50 mm, base cuspidate; petioles 10-15 mm long. Inflorescence: peduncle up to 35 mm long. Flowers 1 or 2 at nodes; pedicels 8-16 mm long. Corolla complicated, up to 50 mm long, basal inflation small and globose, curved shortly after through 90°, then expanding trumpet or funnel-like into 15-20 mm mouth, throat hairy; lobes free at base, broadly deltoid, margins replicate, connivent over tube mouth and producing a short stalk, 5-15 mm long, becoming inflated at apex forming an elliptic or subglobose knob, 3-5 x 2-5 mm and which is fluted and cage-like, margins replicate and ciliate (-like an umbrella with an antenna). Corona: interstaminal corona lobes dorso-ventrally flattened, scale-like, connate basally, upper margin cleft and bidentate; staminal corona lobes fused basally to interstaminal corona, narrowly ligulate, broader at connivent apices and flexed outward.
More
Plant less robust than in subsp. distincta. Leaves rarely over 25 mm long. Sepals 5-10 mm long. Corolla-lobes free at base, abruptly inflexed over mouth of tube and produced into a slender, erect column 10-15 mm long, becoming free and expanding into elliptic-lanceolate, replicate segments connate at tips forming a small apical, ellipsoid cage 5-6 mm long and ciliate on margins.
Subsucculent twining perennial herb. Stems smooth. Corolla lobes extending into slender column expanding again into 5-winged knob 3-5 mm in diameter. Flowers pinkish white or greenish tinted, spotted with violet, 'knob' dull purple or purple-brown.
