Plants forming stout tussocks. Culms 0.8–1.2 m high. Leaf blades 60 cm long, 5–6 mm wide, abscising below ligule, with sheath fragmenting horizontally. Inflorescences open, with 50–100 spikelets. Spikelets 15–17 mm long, with 6–7 florets. Glumes equalling basal lemmas; lower glume 9–12 mm long. Lemma: body 5.5–6 mm long, villous; lobe setae 0–3.5 mm long; awn 10.5–15 mm long. Palea linear to lorate, 7.5–9 mm long, glabrous between keels. Anthers 3–4.2 mm long. Caryopsis 3.5 mm long.
