Characteristics

Perennials, caespitose, bisexual in Australia. Culms herbaceous. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Inflorescences paniculate, with branch axils usually hairy. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, with 3–9 bisexual florets; rachilla prolonged beyond bisexual florets with incomplete florets or terminating at a bisexual floret. Glumes 2, very unequal to ± equal, awnless or rarely awned; lower glume 1 (–3)-veined; upper glume 3-, 5-or 7-veined. Callus blunt. Lemma 2-lobed, with a geniculate awn arising from sinus, with short setae terminating lobes, rounded on back, 7–9-veined, hairy on back in vertical lines between veins or on margins. Palea relatively long, exceeding lemma sinus. Hilum long-linear, ½–⅔ length of caryopsis.
