Characteristics

An erect, slightly pubescent or strigillose herb of 2-4 ft. Leaves 3-5-foliolate; leaflets oblanceolate or oval, acute or acuminate, narrowed below, minutely pubescent or thinly strigillose, equalling or exceeding the petioles. Racemes bracteate; bracts simple or 3-foliolate. Pedicels spreading, about 1/2 in. Stamens 9-10 (6-8). Capsule 3-4 in., narrow-linear, with forking striae, slightly hairy or glabrate, narrowed into a slender style; gynophore about 1/2 in. Seeds nearly smooth and glabrous.

Leaves 3-foliolate, petiolate; leaflets 1.5–5 x 0.6–2.5 cm., membranous, subsessile, elliptic to broadly elliptic, acute and mucronate at the apex, cuneate at the base, sparsely pubescent on both sides with some scattered, sessile glands beneath; petiole 4 cm. long, pubescent; upper leaves becoming reduced in size up the stem and grading into sessile, entire bracts, c. 8 x 3.5 mm., subtending the flowers.
Capsule c. 8 x 0.5 cm., on an elongated, striate, pubescent gynophore up to 1.5 cm. long; valves flattened, tapering to both ends, pubescent, with 8–9 longitudinal anastomosing nerves; persistent style up to 5 mm. long.
Petals yellow, up to 1.2 cm. long, with an oblong lamina rounded and apiculate at the apex, and a claw about half the length of the lamina, the two outer ones slightly narrower.
Stamens 6–8, slightly shorter than the petals, two somewhat shorter than the rest and sometimes sterile; anther-thecae c. 2 mm. long, oblong, bluntly mucronate at the apex.
Sepals up to 7 mm. long, linear-lanceolate with a subulate apex, with both scattered subsessile glands and longer glandular hairs, hairs sometimes purplish.
Ovary linear, flattened, pubescent, subsessile; style somewhat flattened, up to 1 mm. long; stigma subcapitate.
Inflorescence a raceme, dense at first but soon elongating; pedicels slender, pubescent, up to 1–3 cm. long.
Seeds shining brown, c. 1.7 mm. in diam., almost smooth but minutely longitudinally tessellated.
