Characteristics

Annual or short-lived perennial herb, rather shrubby, up to 1.5 m. tall, viscid and strongly smelling.. Stem covered, often densely, with stalked glands and sometimes a few glandular hairs.. Leaves petiolate, (3–)5-foliolate; leaflets oblanceolate or elliptic, commonly 2–3 cm. long, 0.7–1.2 cm. wide, glandular on both sides; petiole 2.5–6 cm. long.. Inflorescence stout, up to 20 cm. long; bracts small, 3-foliolate.. Sepals linear-lanceolate, 5–8 mm. long, covered with small, mostly sessile glands.. Petals ± 12 mm. long, pink or rose.. Stamens 7–8; filaments unequal.. Gynophore 1.5–2.2 cm. long, much longer than the pedicel at maturity; ovary ± 4 mm. long, sessile or nearly so in the newly opened flowers.. Capsules 8–10 cm. long, profusely covered with stalked glands.. Seeds 1.25–2 mm. in diameter, with longitudinal striations and markedly cristate, rather wavy, transverse ridges.. Fig. 2/10, p. 10.
