Characteristics

Petals c. 6 x 1.5 mm., subequal, mauve, the two upper petals with a sulphur-yellow blotch with deep mauve edges, oblanceolate or narrowly elliptic, acute or obtuse at the apex, with a claw c. 1/2 of the length of the lamina.

This may be a variant of Cleome rutidosperma. It is a herb 50 cm tall. It has a few branches. The leaves have 3-5 leaflets. The leaflets are narrowly sword shaped and 1-4 cm long and 3-8 mm wide. The flowers are pink.
Inflorescence a terminal elongated raceme to 15 cm. long, with many flowers; bracts 3-foliolate or simple, similar to the upper leaves but sessile; pedicels up to 1.3 cm. long, glandular-puberulous, capillary.
Capsule c. 2.5 x 0.2 cm., spindle-shaped, reflexed or decurved; valves with c. 12 longitudinal striations, glandular-puberulous, with a persistent style c. 2 mm. long.
Leaves 3–5-foliolate; leaflets 0.5–2.0 x 0.1–0.8 cm., linear to lanceolate or oblanceolate, apex rounded, mucronulate, cuneate at the base; petiole up to 3 cm. long.
Sepals c. 2.3 x 0.5 mm., lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, acuminate at the apex, glandular-puberulous, with a keeled midrib.
Stamens 6, all fertile; filaments c. 7 mm. long; anthers c. 2 x 0.4 mm., narrowly linear, arcuate.
Ovary linear, glandular-puberulous, multiovulate, with a small, sub-sessile, capitate stigma.
Erect, sparsely glandular-setose herb up to 0–5 m. tall; branches slender, striate.
Seeds c. 1.3 mm. in diam., dark brown, transversely ridged.
