Characteristics

Lianas with tendrils; white latex present in all parts. Leaves opposite, inserted on distinct leaf cushions; stipules absent. Inflorescence axillary, thyrsoid, congested or lax. Flowers 5-merous, fragrant. Sepals green, without colleters. Corolla white, pinkish or yellowish; corolla lobes overlapping to the left. Stamens deeply included. Ovary 1–celled, with 2 parietal placentas, almost connate at the base, therefore often seemingly 2–locular. Fruit a yellow or orange berry with black seeds embedded in fibrous pulp; endosperm copious.
