Characteristics

Low annuals or perennials; culms slender, ascending or decumbent. Leaf-blades short, linear or lanceolate; ligule a line of hairs or absent. Inflorescence a panicle, loose or sometimes spike-like. Spikelets 2-flowered, with the florets dissimilar, the lower hermaphrodite and the upper ♀, gaping at maturity; rhachilla slightly elongated between the florets, disarticulating above the upper glume and finally between the florets; glumes persistent, shorter than the florets, broad, obtuse, membranous, the lower up to half as long as the spikelet and 0–5-nerved, the upper a little longer and 3–7-nerved; lemmas membranous, nerveless or few-nerved, obtuse, the lower glabrous or pubescent only at the base, the upper shorter and pubescent; stamens 2–3. Caryopsis ovoid.
