Characteristics

Annual herb. Stem erect, slender, usually branched, 4-angled. Leaves sessile, opposite. Inflorescences axillary, proliferating. Flowers 4-merous, ± sessile. Calyx tube cylindrical, papyraceous; segments acuminate. Corolla tube cylindrical; lobes ovate, much shorter than the tube. Filaments inserted into the corolla tube; anthers narrowly ellipsoid. Ovary unilocular, ellipsoid or oblong; ovules numerous; style filiform; stigma bilobed. Capsule bivalved. Seeds numerous, surface reticulate-pitted.
