Herbs, annual (rarely perennial), decumbent, glabrous herbs. Leaves alternate, linear-oblanceolate to ovate or oblong-ovate; stipules small, scarious; bracts small, scarious. Flowers in compound cymes, 5-merous, bisexual. Sepals 5, free. Petals 5, entire, equal to or longer than sepals, white. Stamens 5. Ovary 1-celled, with 1 basal ovule; style 1, trifid above. Fruit an indehiscent, ± trigonous achene, enclosed by the persistent calyx. Seed globose-ovoid, 3-ribbed, finely striate.
Flowers, small in axillary and terminal clusters or in lax axillary cymes, sometimes aggregated at the ends of the stem-branches, bisexual, 5-merous, with slightly perygnous receptacles.

Fruit a crustaceous, indehiscent capsule, 1-seeded, enclosed in the persistent perianth.

Ovary 1-locular with a solitary basal ovule on a long funicle.
