Characteristics

Perennial herb to 40 cm tall, glabrous except inflorescence; rootstock thick. Leaves basal, sessile or attenuate at base, narrowly oblong to oblanceolate, conspicuously dentate; lamina 5-16 cm long, 3-15 mm wide. Flowers sessile, loosely arranged in heads elongating into spikes to 15 cm long when fruiting; bracteoles to 5 mm long; pedicel almost obsolete. Sepals reduced to tufts of silky hairs to 3 mm long on the ovary. Corolla 5-6 mm long; hairs outside silky, type ii, white; wings to 1 mm wide, smaller above auricle, with a small appendage opposite; calli obsolete. Ovary 2-2.5 mm long. Fruit ellipsoidal, c. 2 mm diam.
