Characteristics

Trunk 2–4 m tall, often falling over and becoming decumbent; accessory growths common along the trunk, eventually developing into separate plants when the trunk falls and decays; base of stipes and trunk apex densely covered with glossy tangled bright red-brown hairs to 4.5 cm long. Fronds in a spreading crown. Stipe to 30 cm long, smooth or verrucose, hairy. Lamina 3-pinnate, oblong-lanceolate, 2–3 m long, bright green to dark green, shiny above, dull and paler beneath, coriaceous; central pinnae longest, c. 15–30 cm long, reduced to each end; basal pinnae spreading at right angles to the rachis; ultimate segments falcate, acute when sterile, obtuse when fertile. Sori 1.5–2 mm diam., solitary on each lobe.
