Characteristics

Trees or shrubs, sometimes lianas, with white or yellow sticky latex. Leaves (sub-) opposite. Inflorescence terminal or in the axils of upper leaves, thyrsoid, lax to congested. Flowers fragrant, actinomorphic except for the slightly unequal sepals. Corolla salver-shaped; tube with a subcampanulate upper and a cylindrical narrower basal portion, constricted at the throat; lobes overlapping to the left, with corona at the base;. Stamens included; anthers completely fertile. Ovary of two free carpels, coherent at the base, placentation parietal, ovules 4 in each carpel; pistil head with a pubescent, basal stigmatic subcylindrical part and a bifid stigmoid apex. Fruits composed of two woody follicles, coherent at the base, 4-seeded. Seeds compressed, obliquely oblong, dorsal side straight, ventral side abruptly curved, long-winged at apex.

Corolla hypocrateriform; tube usually much longer than the calyx, nearly cylindrical, ventricose in the upper half and constricted at the mouth, inside velutinous to sericeous except for the glabrous base; lobes narrowly oblong or narrowly obovate, inside at the base pilose or sericeous, overlapping to the left in bud, spreading.
