Characteristics

Herb with fibrous roots. Stem short. Leaves crowded, narrowly lanceolate, 10–25 cm long on short petioles, glandular above and on margins, glabrous below; stipules adnate to petiole, 5–6 mm long, fimbriate, brown. Scape 1; flowers in one-sided racemes 20–35 cm long, 10–20-flowered; rachis woolly to almost glabrous; bracts linear, 1–2 mm long; pedicels 5–10 mm long. Calyx deeply 5-partite, the lobes broadly lanceolate, acuminate, 2.5–3 mm long, lengthening in fruit to 4–5 mm long. Petals broadly ovate, acute, 2–3 mm long. Stamens with broad, emarginate connec– tive. Styles 3, bipartite, the stigmas broadly bilobed. Capsule 4 mm long. Seeds sub– globose, pitted, black.
