Herb with tuber; vertical stolon 3–10 cm long. Leaves in a flat rosette; lamina broadly spathulate, 2–5 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide, narrowed but scarcely petiolate. Inflores– cence 1, maturing before leaves develop fully, cymose, 10–30(or more)–flowered; peduncle 3–4 cm long; pedicels 3–6 mm long. Calyx 5–7 mm long, divided almost to base into ovate-lanceolate lobes, the margins often deeply incised. Petals obovate, 6–10 mm long, white. Styles 3, each divided almost to base into filiform segments.
Grows in sand, loam andlaterite; flowers more profusely after fire, the inflorescence maturing beforethe leaves. Variants with thick, ridged, yellow-green leaves occur commonly inlateritic and heavy soils.
