Shrub or tree 2–18 m. high, with rounded crown; bark dark grey, smooth or finely reticulate; branches 4-lined or not, flattened to angular and pale grey when young, becoming terete and red-brown to grey-brown or whitish with prominent whitish lenticels.. Leaves with lamina greyish green and often ± glossy above, paler beneath, elliptic or oblanceolate to broadly obovate, 3.5–12.6 × 1.8–7.2 cm., obtuse or subacute or apiculate to rounded at the apex, with margin recurved or somewhat indurated, spreading-to erect-or rarely incurved-spinulose-glandular-dentate to-denticulate or subentire, cuneate to attenuate at the base, coriaceous, with relatively laxly reticulate venation more prominent above than beneath; petiole 2–15 mm. long.. Cymes in axils of bracts on specialised shoots 5–20 mm. long arising from axils of bract-like prophylls or lowermost foliage leaves on current shoots, forming few-flowered paniculate inflorescences or often reduced to 1–3-flowered pseudocymes; peduncle (of cymes) absent or up to ± 3 mm. long; pedicels up to 2.5 mm. long or almost absent, angular, articulated at the base; flowers 1–4 in each cyme, 4–6.5 mm. in diameter, unisexual (plants dioecious)..
