Perennial, densely tufted, up to 0.7 m high. Leaf blades up to 200 mm long, up to 6.5 mm wide. Basal sheaths densely woolly-hairy, sometimes this only visible on inner sheaths. Spikelets 2-5 mm long, 1.5-3.0 mm wide. Inflorescence branches spreading, with many spikelets, either appressed to branches or spreading; spikelets dark olive-green, rhachilla persistent, lemmas and/or paleas breaking up from base upwards; lemma acute, lateral nerves conspicuous; palea keels entire, scabrid; anthers 3, 0.7-1.0 mm long. Caryopsis ellipsoid.
