Characteristics

Deciduous shrubs, 2-3 m tall; branches and twigs gray-green to gray-brown, with corky wing, sometimes terete. Petiole 3-5 mm; leaf blade papery, ovate-lanceolate, 3.5-5 × 1-1.5 (-2.5) cm, base subrounded or attenuate, margin crenulate, apex acuminate or acute; lateral veins 4-6 pairs, slightly curving forward and disappearing before reaching margin. Peduncle slender, 1.8-2.5 cm, 1 or 2 × dichotomously branched, several flowered; pedicel 10-15 mm. Flowers 4-merous, 6-9 mm in diam.; sepals semiorbicular; petals dark red, oblong. Capsule subglobose, 4-angled, base attenuate, brown or yellow-brown to red-brown, ca. 8 × 9-10 mm. Seeds subglobose, dark brown or black, partially covered by orange aril. Fl. May-Jul, fr. Aug-Oct.
