Characteristics

Tree or shrub to 15 m high, may be buttressed. Leaves distichous; lamina elliptic to narrowly ovate, (3.6–) 8–14 cm long, 2.8–4.5 cm wide, cuneate at base, entire or rarely toothed (with prickle-like teeth) margin, acute to long-acuminate at apex, glabrous, rarely sparsely scabrid (sandpapery); lateral veins 7–10 pairs; petiole 0.4–1 cm long; stipules c. 0.5–1 cm long. Figs axillary, ramiflorous or often cauliflorous, ± globular to ovoid, to 2 cm long, c. 1.2–1.7 cm wide, yellow, orange, red, purple or black, glabrous; ostiolar bracts forming a small beak 3 mm diam.; basal bracts small, alternate; peduncle 0.5–2 cm long. Male flowers ostiolar; stamens 1 or 2. Female flowers shortly pedicellate; tepals 4 or 5.
