Leaves spirally arranged; lamina oblong to elliptic or ± obovate, sometimes ovate, 1-9.5 x 0.6–5.5 cm., chartaceous to subcoriaceous; apex shortly acuminate to subacute; base rounded to cordate; margin crenulate; superior surface puberulous to hirtellous or hispidulous, sometimes black punctate when dry, inferior surface puberulous to hirtellous on the veins; lateral veins 3–5(6) pairs, the basal pairs faintly branched, usually ending near the margin well below the middle of the lamina, tertiary venation reticulate; petiole 3–20 mm. long, 0.5–1 mm. thick, epidermis not flaking off; stipules 2–12 mm. long, sparsely puberulous to hirtellous, caducous.
Leafy twigs 1–3(6) mm. thick, puberulous to hirtellous or subtomentellous, periderm not flaking off, bark of the older wood often blackish and conspicuously lenticellate.
Receptacle subglobose, 1–1.2 cm. in diam. when fresh, 0.5–1 cm. in diam. when dry, puberulous to hirtellous, green with red spots or reddish at maturity.
Figs in pairs in the leaf axils, also on older wood, sessile; basal bracts 2–2.5 mm. long, persistent.
Shrub or tree up to 7 m. tall, terrestrial or sometimes hemi-epiphytic and strangling.
