Rhizome 2.5–3.5 mm diam., scaly; scales scattered, shiny, blackish brown, appressed, rounded, deciduous, entire. Fronds 25–40 (–65) cm long, consisting of 2 terminal branches lacking a dormant bud between them; undersurface at first bearing dense dark brown glossy scales with whitish ciliate margins, soon glabrescent. Stipe 9–46 cm long, with scales as on the rhizome, rough (especially basally) due to papillate projections. Pinnules glabrous above, with scattered deciduous ciliate scales below; ultimate segments 1–1.6 mm long, 1.2–2 mm wide, round to oblong, flat above but strongly recurved, pouched below; undersurface white. Sori of 2–4 sporangia.
Occurring on banks of streams, in boggy soils, on steep wet mossy slopes and on rock ledges in exposed situations at high altitude.
