Rhizome 1.5–3.5 mm diam., clothed at first with appressed dark blackish brown lanceolate scales with stiff erect cilia. Frond of 1–3 tiers of branches, 9–200 cm long; lower tiers often branching. Stipe 10–55 cm long, widely scattered along rhizome, bearing scattered dark brown lanceolate scales with whitish woolly cilia, soon glabrescent, smooth; rachis bearing red-brown to dark blackish brown stellate hairs and lanceolate ciliate scales, sometimes glabrescent. Pinnules glabrous; ultimate segments 1–2.5 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, oblong to triangular, obtuse or acute, flat, although sometimes recurved when dry; undersurface green, paler than upper surface. Sori of 2–4 sporangia.
Rhizome slender, wiry, clad in reddish-brown fimbriate scales, mingled with slender paler hairs, becoming glab. Stipes similarly clad, becoming glab., c. 2 mm. diam., up to 30 cm. long. Fronds us. several times branched, branches ± clad in stellate hairs and fimbriate scales. Pinnae 1-4 cm. long; pinnules 30-50, close-set, up to 3 mm. long, oblong-triangular, blunt, flat to slightly concave, often glaucous below. Sporangia 2-4 per sorus, rarely fewer by abortion, shining, bright to brownish-yellow.
