Characteristics

Erect or ascending herb 30–45 cm tall. Stems 4-angled, scabrous. Leaves decussate, ovate to narrowly ovate, obtuse, sparsely scabrous; lamina 2.5–3 cm long; margins thickened, serrate with 16–20 teeth; petiole 2–3 mm long. Bracts alternate, sessile, lanceolate, 1.5–2.7 mm long, entire or with 1 or 2 teeth, caducous; bracteoles ovate, 0.3 mm long, entire or serrulate, caducous. Flowers 4-merous; pedicel 0.1–0.3 mm long. Sepals oblong, 0.5–0.6 mm long, convex, smooth, red to green. Petals 2.3–2.6 mm long, dark red. Stamens 8; anthers 1.8–2.1 mm long. Ovary weakly 8-ribbed with 3 or 4 conical calluses between ribs, glabrous except just below sepals, red-grey. Fruit ovoid to cylindrical, 1–1.4 mm long; pedicel 0.3–0.5 mm long.
