Characteristics

Erect or ascending herb or subshrub 25–70 cm tall. Stems smooth, scabrous. Leaves decussate, sessile, ovate to orbicular, acute or obtuse, subcordate basally, scabrous; lamina 0.7–1.7 cm long; margins slightly thickened, with 8–16 moderately coarse teeth. Bracts alternate, linear, 1.3–2 mm long, entire, green; bracteoles ovate-oblong, 0.2–0.4 mm long, very weakly serrulate at apex, brown. Flowers 4-merous; pedicel 0.2–0.4 mm long. Sepals ovate, 0.4–0.7 mm long, saccate basally, red to green. Petals 2.2–2.7 mm long, dark red. Stamens 8; anthers 1.7–2.1 mm long. Ovary 8-ribbed or almost smooth, scabrous, purplish. Fruit obovoid, 0.9–1 mm long, 8-ribbed, scabrous, grey to purplish; pedicel 0.4–0.5 mm long.
