Characteristics

Perennial herb or small subshrub 30–45 cm tall. Stems decumbent or ascending, weakly 4-ribbed, pilose. Leaves all alternate, sessile, linear to terete, entire, sparsely pilose; lamina 1.5–3.5 cm long; margins revolute. Bracts alternate, linear to terete, 0.2–0.7 mm long, entire, pilose to almost glabrous, green; bracteoles ovate, 0.4–0.6 mm long, brown, margins irregular. Flowers 4-merous, pendent; pedicel 1 mm long. Sepals strongly cordate, 1.3–1.4 mm long, attached only by centre base, auricles covering 1/2–2/3 ovary, green. Petals usually 2.4–2.5 mm long, yellow-green. Stamens 8; anthers 1.9–2.1 mm long. Ovary 8-ribbed, irregularly verrucose with a 2-or 3-celled hair atop each wart, slate-grey to red. Fruit 1–1.3 mm long, slate-grey, crowned by persistent cordate sepals.
