Characteristics

Annual herb 8–15 cm tall. Stems smooth, pilose. Leaves opposite, alternate above, ovate, sparsely pilose when young; lamina 8–11 mm long; margins thickened, hyaline, with 8–12 small teeth; petiole 2–3 mm long. Bracts alternate, lanceolate to oblanceolate, 1.2–1.7 mm long, green, margins entire and thickened; bracteoles orbicular, 0.2 mm diam., ciliate. Flowers 4-merous, solitary; pedicel 0.5–0.6 mm long. Sepals ovate, 0.5 mm long; margins thickened. Petals 1.6 mm long, yellow to red. Stamens 8; anthers 1.3 mm long. Ovary 8-ribbed with c. 4 conical protuberances between pairs of ribs in bulb, olive. Fruit urceolate, 1.6 mm long including sepals, shiny, glabrous, silver-grey to yellow-brown.
