Characteristics

Procumbent or ascending perennial herb 10–15 cm tall. Stems 4-angled, appressed pilose. Leaves decussate, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, coriaceous, glabrous or sparsely pilose basally on lower surface; lamina 3.5–6 mm long; margins thickened, serrate with 4–6 teeth; petiole 1–3 mm long. Bracts leaflike, decussate, becoming alternate, 2–4 mm long; bracteoles lanceolate, 0.8–1.5 mm long, entire, red-brown. Flowers 4-merous; pedicel 0.2–0.5 mm long. Sepals deltoid, 0.9–1 mm long; margins thickened; basal callus. Petals 1.5–1.8 mm long. Stamens 4, opposite sepals; anthers 0.8–1.2 mm long; staminodes 4, opposite petals, to 0.5 mm long. Ovary 8-ribbed, often with 2 oblique calluses between ribs, glabrous, usually silvery grey to reddish purple. Fruit 1.5–1.6 mm long, silvery grey.
