Goodenia heterotricha M.D.Barrett & R.L.Barrett

Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Goodeniaceae > Goodenia

Characteristics

Erect or sprawling annual 0.3–0.6 m high, few-branched from leaf axils; glabrous (except corolla) or with sparse, simple, spreading to ascending, usually curved, eglandular hairs 0.3–0.6 (–1.2) mm long in inflorescence branch axils, near leaf margins, pedicels or lower stem. Cotyledons not persisting. Leaves cauline, all distinctly spaced, almost linear to narrowly lanceolate to narrowly oblanceolate, 29–71 mm long, 1.5–4.5 mm wide, flat with margin tightly revolute, midrib prominent (remaining visible below), upper leaves sometimes canaliculate, very gradually tapered at the base, never auriculate or decurrent, acute apex, bright green, drying green; upper leaves entire, reduced and bract-like below the inflorescence, as small as 4 mm long, 0.5 mm wide. Inflorescence a long, terminal raceme, 60–310 mm long, but lower axils may also have irregular solitary flowers, axis not or inconspicuously zigzag; bracts leaf-like, 3.5–4.5 mm long, 0.2–4.2 mm wide, linear to narrowly lanceolate; pedicels 1 (2) per axil, never umbellate, 16–40 mm long, articulate 0.5–1.5 mm below the ovary, ebracteolate, glabrous or more usually very sparsely simple-hairy. Sepals all equal, narrowly triangular, ageing ± linear-terete, 1.0–2.2 mm long, not or scarcely enlarging in fruit, with sparse ascending to erect hairs c. 0.1–0.3 (–0.4) mm long, sometimes also with very sparse, minute glandular hairs c. 0.05 mm long. Corolla yellow with purplish auricles and brownish venation, 10.5–16 mm long, external surfaces with moderately dense simple hairs only; pubescent in 2 lines in throat, otherwise glabrous internally; base of corolla forming a short tube 2.1–2.8 mm long at anthesis, tapering at base, with slightly raised, darker veins, weakly webbed, with short, sparse ± appressed hairs c. 0.1 mm long; corolla pouch present but shallow; adaxial side of corolla deeply split; lobes all moderately winged, adaxial lobes 5.6–7.0 mm long, 0.8–1.2 mm wide (without wings), wings ± equal (not reduced above auricle), 1.1–1.9 mm in longest dimension (dry); abaxial lobes united for 4.0–6.0 mm from junction with the adaxial lobes, the abaxial lobes 3.0–6.0 mm long, 1.2–1.5 mm wide; wings 0.6–1.5 mm in longest dimension. Anther filaments 3.0–3.5 mm long; anthers 1.2–1.5 mm long. Style glabrous below indusium; indusium broader than long, depressed-semi-circular, 1.2–1.8 mm long, 2.5–3.0 mm wide, glabrous apart from orifice and lower surface, the orifice densely ciliate, hairs on upper lip all ± equal, 0.45–0.55 mm long, longest hairs on lower lip 1.0–1.1 mm long (longest in centre), all hairs white. Ovary tapering basally in flower, septum c. ⅓–½ length of the ovary, ovules c. 12, in 2 rows either side of the septum, with a narrow hyaline wing visible at anthesis. Capsule compressed-ovoid, ribbed, 5.3–6.5 mm long, 3.1–4.0 mm wide, finally gaping widely after seeds released, broadly acute to narrowly obtuse basally. Seeds thick, body elliptic, approximately flat, coarsely granular-tuberculate, dark brown at maturity, dull, with a distinct thickened rim, 2.2–3.0 mm long, 1.3–1.8 mm wide including the wing when present, wing obsolete or 0.05–0.25 mm wide, ± equal in width all round, pale, thick.
