Herbs or low shrubs. Leaves variable. Flowers in thyrses, racemes, spikes or subumbels, bracteolate or ebracteolate. Sepals ± adnate to ovary or free. Corolla sometimes with pouch or spur, sometimes with enations inside, usually bilabiate; lobes winged, 2 long and adaxial, 3 shorter and abaxial, sometimes adaxial lobes auriculate. Stamens free, epigynous. Ovary usually incompletely 2-locular; style unbranched or 2–4-fid; indusia 1–4. Ovules in 2 rows in each locule or scattered over surface of placentas, rarely solitary. Fruit usually capsular, rarely a small, 1-seeded nut or a large, hard, 4-seeded drupe. Seeds flat, usually winged.
