Characteristics

Woody perennial liane; latex white. Roots fibrous. Leaves petiolate; lamina herbaceous, glabrous or with scattered hairs; colleters present. Inflorescence umbelliform. Corolla depressed-globose; tube depressed-globose; lobes very short, free at tips, valvate. Annular corona comprising raised tissue outside gynostegial corona; corolline corona absent; gynostegial corona interstaminal and composed of a tube completely enclosing the staminal column, with 5 irregularly toothed lobes recurving back from top of tube and 5 smaller lobes halfway down tube, at 90° to tube wall, alternating with corpuscles. Stamens connate into gynostegium, not markedly capitate. Anthers 2-locular, with terminal appendage; pollen in linear tetrads; pollinaria with 2, semi-erect, globose pollinia lacking pellucid germinating mouth; corpusculum oblong; caudicles not winged, geniculate near middle. Style-head depressed-globose. Follicles fusiform-ovoid. Seeds flattened, oblong, comose at micropylar end.
