Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Hackelochloa

Characteristics

Annual. Culms 10–80 cm high, branching, small prop roots often present; nodes hairy. Leaves: ligule hair-fringed, 0.5–1.5 mm long; blade 2–18 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, pilose with tubercle-based hairs on both surfaces especially on the margins, midrib not prominently winged. Inflorescence of 1–5 spike-like racemes, each raceme solitary in a subtending spathe and pedunculate, peduncles 1–3 cm long, racemes 5–17 mm long, comprised of 4–8 spikelet pairs; spikelet pairs alternating along raceme, sessile glumes more visible on one side of axis, and pedicellate spikelets, internodes and pedicels more visible on the other side; raceme internodes and pedicels to c. 1.5 mm long (pedicels usually slightly shorter than internode), pedicels and internode fused together throughout, concave on one side into which sessile spikelet is partially embedded, glabrous but finely warty or tuberculate under high magnification. Sessile spikelets 1–1.7 mm long, c. 1.5 mm wide, swollen, partially embedded into cavity in rachis segment; lower glume orbicular or subglobose, constricted towards base, rounded on back, same size as spikelet, no wings present, round at apex, glabrous, pitted or rugose and finely tubercled or warty on the back, indurated; upper glume narrowly obovate, shorter than lower glume, main body adhering to the cavity, acute or obtuse, glabrous, cartiliginous with hyaline margins (not always easy to see); florets 2, the lower lemma oblong or ovate, glabrous, hyaline, sterile, palea absent, the upper lemma ovate or broadly elliptical, obtuse, hyaline, fertile, upper palea ovate or elliptical. Pedicellate spikelets with pedicel completely fused with rachis/internode, similar in length to sessile spikelet or slightly longer; lower glume lanceolate or narrowly elliptic, asymmetrical, glabrous, very finely scabrelous under high magnification, herbaceous to coriaceous but inflexible, with wing usually one sided or unevenly developed; upper glume lanceolate, acute, glabrous or sometimes very finely scabrelous under high magnification, stiffly herbaceous or coriaceous, strongly 1-keeled with keel winged and sides strongly folded inwards; sometimes reduced to glumes only or 2 sterile lemmas or with a lower floret with lemma only and upper floret with lemma and palea, male or sterile.
More
Annual. Culms tufted, erect, up to 60 cm tall, branched from base. Leaf sheaths loose, slightly inflated, keeled; leaf blades linear-lanceolate, 5–20 × 0.4–1 cm, coarsely hispid, base subamplexicaul, apex subacute; ligule ca. 1 mm. Racemes 0.7–1.5(–2) cm; peduncle often pubescent; rachis internodes 1–1.5(–2) mm. Sessile spikelet 1–1.5 mm, usually cream-colored at maturity; lower glume hemispherical, coarsely reticulate-rugose, pits shallow and separated by broad rounded ribs, the whole surface finely granular; upper glume hyaline below, thickening upward toward the crested apex; lower lemma hyaline; upper lemma hyaline, ca. 1.1 mm, upper palea as long. Pedicelled spikelet 1.5–2.5 mm, glumes with prominent green veins and whitish wings. Fl. and fr. Jun–Oct. 2n = 14.
Annual; culms erect or ascending, 30-100 cm. high, freely branching, more or less papillose-hispid, especially below the nodes; sheaths short, densely and con-spicuously papillose-hispid; blades mostly 5-15 cm. long, 5-12 mm. wide, flat, papillose-hirsute on both surfaces, the margins ciliate; racemes numerous, short, partly enclosed in the subtending spathe; fertile spikelet 1 mm. long, the pedicellate spikelet 2 mm. long.
Annual; culms 5–100 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades linear-lanceolate, 2–15 cm. long, 4–12 mm. wide, coarsely hispid, subamplexicaul.. Racemes 5–15 mm. long.. Sessile spikelet ± 1 mm. long; upper glume narrowly crested at the apex.. Pedicelled spikelet 1.5–2.5 mm. long.. Fig. 200.
Annual, up to 1 m high. Leaf blades 20-150 mm long, 6-12 mm wide. Spikelets (sessile) 1.0-1.5 mm long (pedicellate slightly longer), sessile spikelet globose, lower glume pitted and tuberculate.
Annual 50-1000 mm high, rough with tubercle-based, hispid hairs. Leaf blade 20-150 x 6-12 mm, rough. Sessile spikelet 1.0-1.5 mm long, pitted, tuberculate. Pedicelled spikelet 1.5-2.5 mm long.
Sessile spikelet c. 1 mm long and wide; superior glume narrowly crested at the apex.
Leaf laminas 2–15 cm × 4–12 mm, coarsely hispid, subamplexicaul.
