Characteristics

Perennial. Leaf-blades narrow; ligule a ciliate rim. Inflorescence of racemes scattered along a central axis, the spikelets shortly pedicelled. Spikelets laterally compressed, disarticulating between the florets, awnless, the short rhachilla-internodes bearded at the apex with long hairs up to 1/2 the length of the lemma; glumes persistent, subequal, the lower 3–5-nerved, the upper 5–7-nerved; lemmas exserted from the glumes, coriaceous, rounded on the back or keeled only above the middle, acute or slightly obtuse, entire, shortly mucronate; palea as long as the lemma. Caryopsis elliptic to elliptic-oblong, concavo-convex in section.
