Characteristics

Herbaceous annual 20–40 cm tall, with taproot. Stems smooth, glabrous. Leaves subsucculent, lowermost subopposite, most alternate, linear-lanceolate to oblanceolate, 6–8-toothed, glabrous; lamina 20–50 mm long, 5–12 mm wide; petiole 5–10 mm long, winged. Inflorescence of 7–15-flowered dichasia; bracts at base of inflorescence similar to leaves, reduced above; bracteoles membranous, deltoid, 0.1–0.9 mm long, hyaline, caducous. Flowers 3-merous; pedicel 0.8–1.5 mm long, glabrous. Sepals ovate, 0.8–1 mm long, smooth. Petals 2.5–3 mm long, yellow-green to red or brown. Stamens 6. Ovary 3-locular, 3-winged, glabrous; styles 3. Fruit ovoid, 6.5–8 mm long, 5.5–8 mm diam., 3-winged, irregularly rugose or ribbed between opaque, papery wings.
