Characteristics

Perennial herb 30–60 cm tall, with taproot. Stems smooth or weakly 4-ribbed, glabrous. Leaves opposite or subopposite at base, alternate above, sessile, linear to terete, submucronate, entire or very weakly tubercular-toothed, glabrous or sparsely scabrous; lamina 20–45 mm long. Inflorescence of 5–7-flowered dichasia; lateral inflorescences in upper axils; bracts linear-lanceolate, 4.5–6 mm long, mucronate, glabrous or scabrous, green; bracteoles lanceolate, 0.5–0.8 mm long, brown. Flowers 4-merous; pedicel to 0.2 mm long, Sepals narrowly deltoid, 0.6–0.9 mm long. Petals 2–2.7 mm long, red. Stamens 8. Ovary 4-locular, 8-ribbed/angled; styles 4. Fruit 3–7 per axil, ovoid, globose or almost obpyriform, 1.2–1.5 mm long, 1–1.4 mm diam., 8-ribbed (those between sepals sometimes wing-like), glabrous.
