Perennial subshrub 40–80 cm tall, with taproot. Stems ascending, unribbed, with dense hooked hairs. Leaves alternate, sessile, broadly lanceolate to narrowly ovate, scabrous; lamina 25–50 mm long; margins weakly revolute, dentate. Inflorescence of 3–5-flowered dichasia; occasional lateral inflorescences in upper leaf axils; bracts broadly lanceolate, 15–25 mm long, serrate, scabrous, green; bracteoles linear-lanceolate, 1.5–2.5 mm long, entire, green or brown. Flowers 4-merous, subsessile. Sepals deltoid to subcordate, 1.2–1.4 mm long. Petals 2.8–3 mm long, yellow to green. Stamens 8. Ovary 4-locular, unribbed, scabrous; styles 4. Fruit 1–3 per axil, slightly depressed-globose, 3.5–4.5 mm long, 4–5.5 mm diam., smooth to rugulose, scabrous, green, red or brown.
