Caespitose. Culms slender, 11–50 cm high, 2 or 3-noded, unbranched above; mid-culm nodes usually hidden by leaf sheaths. Leaves: basal sheaths occasionally purple; ligule acute or obtuse; blade 2.2–13.5 cm long, 1.5–8 mm wide. Panicles somewhat contracted, 3.5–10.5 cm long. Spikelets 3.4–4.7 mm long, oblong at maturity with florets spreading slightly. Glumes subequal, slightly shorter than adjacent lemma; lower glume 2.5–3.6 mm long, slightly keeled, prominently 1 (–3)-nerved; upper glume 2.9–4.1 mm long, keeled. Lower florets apparently sterile (with rudimentary reproductive organs only) or rarely male (with 3 fully-developed stamens); lemmas 3.1–3.8 mm long, shortly bifid, 1-awned, ciliate with pale golden hairs; lemma awns approximately equal, arising from upper third of lemma, usually exceeding lemma apex by 0.4–0.8 mm or sometimes not exceeding apex; anthers (when present) c. 1.5 mm long. Bisexual floret: lemma 2.5–3.4 mm long, acute, usually muticous or with vestigial awn not or barely exceeding lemma apex, 5-nerved, shortly hairy above; palea equalling lemma; anthers 1.3–1.9 mm long, sometimes sterile. Caryopsis ellipsoid; hilum punctiform.
Common in herb and grassfields, heath, shaded sitesamong boulders, cliff ledges, stream banks, above 950 m altitude.
