Hiérochloé (fr)

Genus

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae

Characteristics

Perennials with aromatic shoots (coumarin-scented), rhizomatous or caespitose or rarely stoloniferous, bisexual. Leaves: ligule an unfringed membrane; blade rolled in bud. Inflorescences paniculate, open or somewhat contracted. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes, not disarticulating between florets, with 3 florets, the 2 lower florets male or rarely sterile, with 1 bisexual floret terminating rachilla. Glumes 2, very unequal to ±equal, ±equalling florets, awnless, usually keeled; lower glume 1–5-nerved; upper glume 3–5-nerved. Lower florets: lemma 5-nerved, sometimes shortly awned; palea 2-keeled; stamens 3 or absent. Bisexual floret: lemma awnless or mucronate, rounded on back, 3–7-nerved; palea keeled, 1-nerved; lodicules present; stamens 2. Caryopsis: hilum short; embryo small.
More
Spikelets articulated above the glumes, with 2 lower staminate lemmas and one upper fertile lemma of different form; glumes broad, very thin, obscurely 3-veined, glabrous, subequal, the second slightly wider; staminate lemmas firm, brown, rounded on the back, densely ciliate, acute; fertile lemma indurate at maturity, awnless; palea 1–3 veined; fragrant perennials, the sterile shoots with elongate basal lvs, the fertile usually with small blades and a terminal panicle of broad spikelets. 10+, temp. and cool regions, mostly N. Hemisphere.
