Characteristics

Slender annual, caespitose, erect or geniculately ascending. Culms to 40 cm high. Leaves scattered along culms; basal sheaths pubescent to pilose; ligule more or less acute, dentate with scattered cilia at apex, abaxially hairy; blade to 10 cm long, 1–5 mm wide, pubescent to pilose. Panicles 2–8 cm long; primary branches hispid. Spikelets 3–4.5 mm long. Glumes subequal, 3.5–4 mm long, acute, with upper 20% of keel stiffly hairy; awn 2–4 mm long. Lemma elliptic, 1.5–2 mm long, acute, keeled, 3–5-nerved. Upper floret usually sterile or sometimes male; lemma c. 1.2 mm long; lemma awn c. 2 mm long, dorsal, strongly bent.
