Characteristics

Tufted perennial, 200-600 mm high; basal sheaths fibrous with age. Leaf blade 60-170(-240) x 3-6 mm, rigid; auricles absent or small and rounded; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence spike-like, 8-17 mm wide (including awns); rachis fragile, readily disarticulating at maturity; spikelets in groups of 3, triads falling together as unit. Central spikelet sessile to subsessile; pedicels < 0.5 mm long; glumes 35-80 mm long, awn-like, scabrid, not widened or flattened at base. Floret 1, bisexual; lemma glabrous, awn up to 20 mm long; palea glabrous; anther 0.6-1.5 mm long, yellow. Lateral spikelets awn-like; lemma shorter than glumes, awn 10-12 mm long; anther 0.8-1.5 mm long. Flowering time Oct.-Apr.

Inflorescence 8-17 mm wide (including awns), spike-like, rachis readily disarticulating at maturity. Central spikelet sessile to subsessile, pedicel shorter than 0.5 mm long; glumes 13-23 mm long, awn-like, scabrid, spreading at maturity; lemma glabrous, awn to 22 mm long; palea glabrous; anthers 1.8-4.0 mm long, yellow. Lateral spikelets well developed to reduced and awn-like; glumes 12-17 mm long.
Perennial, up to 0.7 m tall. Leaves linear, rigid, without auricles, becoming fibrous below; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence a 2-ranked, dense, false spike. Spikelets grouped and falling in threes, middle fertile, laterals often reduced to awns up to 20 mm long; glumes of lateral spikelets scabrid. Fertile spikelet 1-flowered.
Perennial; up to 0.6 m high; tufted. Leaf blades 60-170(-240) x 3-6 mm; rigid; lacking auricles; leaf sheaths fibrous with age. Flowers: spike with clusters of spikelets on reduces axes; 8-17 mm wide (including awns); rachis readily disarticulating at maturity; lemmas glabrous; awn up to 22 mm long.
