Characteristics

Annual, erect or geniculate. Culms 18–30 cm high. Leaves non-auriculate; ligule to 0.5 mm long, hyaline; blade 2.5–8 cm long, 1.25–2.25 mm wide, flat, adaxially shortly puberulous to pilose. Inflorescence 2–5 cm long; rachis shattering above spikelets. Lateral spikelets sterile: lower glume broadened, often winged, with margins smooth or scabrous; upper glume bristle-like, with margins scabrous. Bisexual spikelet: lower glume subulate, 7.5–15 mm long, cartilaginous to indurated (margin chartaceous), scabrous; lemma narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic, 5.5–7 mm long, long-acuminate, with awn to 4.5 mm long, less firm than glumes, with all nerves glabrous or papillose to scabrous and intercostal regions glabrous or papillose; palea infolded along midnerve, with glabrous groove, with nerves glabrous to apically scabrous; anthers 1 mm long.
