Perennial, erect. Culms to 70 cm high. Leaves non-auriculate; ligule c. 1 mm long, membranous; blade 6–15 cm long, 2–4 mm wide, flat, adaxially puberulous to pubescent. Inflorescence 4–15 cm long; rachis shattering above spikelets. Lateral spikelets sterile; glumes bristle-like, scabrous on margins. Bisexual spikelet: lower glume subulate to narrowly oblong, 10–20 mm long, cartilaginous to indurated; lemma narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic, 4–8 mm long, acuminate, muticous or awned, with awn to 15 mm long, less firm than glumes, apically scaberulous; palea infolded along midnerve.
