Characteristics

Leaves c. 4, basal, closely enfolding the base of the scape and sheathed by 1 or more outer cataphylls; inner cataphylls present on the scape or absent, not sheathing; leaf laminas ± long-attenuate at the base into an indistinctly defined petiole; petiole shorter than or sometimes nearly equalling the lamina, or petiole absent in young leaves.

Seeds globose; testa clathrate, the lattice thick and deeply pitted, sometimes the pits completely piercing the testa, the inner walls of the pits covered in microprickles; endosperm present but chalazosperm lacking.
Inflorescence scapose with flowers racemosely arranged; scape occasionally with a solitary sterile bract below the lowermost flower; raceme with scarious linear-triangular bracts deciduous at the fruiting stage.
Capsule with only one or occasionally 2 carpels developing a seed; fertile carpels globose, dehiscing by a complete longitudinal split.
Ovary 3-locular, semi-inferior; ovules 2 per carpel, only one developing into a seed.
Anther thecae oblong, opening introrsely by an oblique clavate pore at the apex.
Corms several superposed one above the other.
Pollen grains with a perforate tectum.
