Characteristics

Mature leaves (including an indistinct petiole) 10–60 × 3–9 cm, elliptic to linear-oblanceolate, acute at the apex; young leaves sheathing and ± funnel-shaped at first, with the flowering scape well exserted from the centre.

Capsule maturing to dark-brown, 1–2-lobed (in specimens seen), with remnants of aborted lobes persisting; lobe 4.5-6 mm in diameter, globose, glabrous.
Corms up to 2 cm in diameter, usually shortly cylindric or bucket-shaped and as broad as deep, or sometimes discoid, at or just below ground level.
Raceme up to 9 cm long, 10–25-flowered; bracts up to 3 cm long, successively shorter towards the apex; pedicels 2–8 mm long, rigidly ascending.
Seeds straw-coloured, 4.5-6 mm in diameter (measurements from East African specimens).
Anther thecae 2.5–3 mm long, oblong; filaments yellow, 0.8–1.3 mm long.
Inflorescence 15–35 cm long including the scape.
Erect perennial herb up to c. 60 cm tall.
Ovary c. 2 mm long, turbinate.
Style c. 6 mm long, filiform.
