Corolla strongly zygomorphic; tube usually rather short, gibbous, contracted below the limb (mainly in bud), split dorsally to near base of tube giving a 1-lipped appearance; limb 5-lobed with the lobes all on anterior side arranged in a single lip comprising 2 separate posterior lobes, 2 lateral lobes and a larger median anterior labelliform lobe.
Stamens 4, didynamous, inserted near the mouth of corolla tube; filaments rolled into a circle in the bud and distinctly exserted from split in the corolla tube at anthesis, parallel, ascending then curving downwards, with a tuft of scales at the base; anthers with parallel or ± divergent thecae.
Calyx often coloured; tube shortly funnel-shaped; limb broadly expanded rotate or patelliform, shallowly to ± deeply 5-lobed, very accrescent and papyraceous with a ± raised reticulation in fruit.
Fruit dry, hard, turbinate, obpyramidal or obconical, sometimes ± strongly 4-lobed above, rounded or ± flat at the apex, separating at maturity in 4 (?sometimes 2) trigonous mericarps.
Ovary hairy, 2 carpellate, each carpel divided into 2 loculi; ovules one per locule; style long, ± equalling and curved like the stamens; stigma short, 2-fid.
Inflorescences cymose, axillary or crowded at apices of shoots and appearing terminal.
Trees or shrubs, unarmed or with small axillary spines; stems sometimes subscandent.
Leaves deciduous, petiolate, opposite, simple, entire dentate or sublobed.
